 | COMPANY
PROFILE Three generations of the Robbins family have owned and operated
Robbins Auto Top Company, Inc. since its founding in 1943. In
April 2001 our company moved into a new 53,000 sq. foot one story
building in Oxnard, CA. Our employment fluctuates between 130
and 150 people due to the seasonal nature of our business. |
We
began as an automotive trim and upholstery shop. In the 1950’s
Robbins began shipping tonneau covers for MG, Triumph, Jaguar,
Porsche and other convertibles, to mail order customers throughout
the U.S.A. Airline pilots would come to our shop to purchase
tonneau covers and tops to take home with them to sell to friends
in Britain, Germany, Australia and other countries. In the late 1960’s
Robbins began manufacturing tops and tonneau covers for European
convertibles. To build sales we opened distributors in the western
U.S.A. to resell our convertible tops and tonneau covers to auto
trim and upholstery shops. In the 1970’s Robbins
began to expand its network of distributors to most major cities
throughout the U.S.A., and began exporting to other countries. In
1971 Robbins joined the A.I.S.A. organization, which merged with
other organizations to become the Automotive Aftermarket Industry
Association that we belong to today. We currently have
approximately 60 distributors in the U.S.A., and an additional 35
distributors in Canada, Australia, Japan and Western Europe. When we began
manufacturing convertible tops and tonneau covers we concentrated
on making products for European models, since it was difficult to
obtain high quality convertible tops in the U.S.A. for these
convertibles. In 1985 we began to manufacture convertible tops,
glass and plastic rear windows and other products for American
built convertibles. As we continued to
develop as an organization we started working with customers
outside our traditional aftermarket base. In 1990 we began
shipping tonneau covers for Miata convertibles to Mazda. Our
tonneau covers were used as OE equipment on Special Edition Miatas,
and were offered as accessory items by Mazda dealers. In 1992 we approached
Ford to submit a bid to supply tops for Capri convertibles for
warranty and service parts requirements of Ford dealers in the
U.S.A. and Canada. As a result we were required to pass the
stringent Ford Q1 quality standards, and we passed our Q1 quality
audit in 1994. We are currently
working to obtain ISO/QS 9000 Quality System Certification and plan
to achieve this by the end of the year. Our company is a
leader in quality and innovation in the aftermarket. Robbins has
been granted three U.S. Patents, and have other Patent applications
pending in the U.S.A. and other countries. In our Catalog we list
more than 500 different convertible tops, tonneau covers, glass and
plastic windows and other products we manufacture for American,
European and Japanese convertibles. Everything we have
achieved is due to the support of our customers, and we look
forward to serving our customers for many years to come. |
Why You Should Buy Robbins Convertible
Tops and Related Products
Robbins is committed
to manufacturing high quality products which offer long term value
to convertible owners. We use only first quality toppings and
original style components and finest custom workmanship to
manufacture our Convertible Tops, Glass and Plastic Windows,
Tonneau Covers, Top Boots, Headliners and accessories.
*
Computerized Cutting: We use advanced Gerber Cutter cutting
technology to design and cut our products.
* Factory
Designs Duplicated or Improved: Robbins duplicates factory
designs, and improves upon them when necessary. We add
reinforcements, use better heatsealing processes, and other
manufacturing techniques; to produce high quality
products.
*Heatsealed
Reinforcements: We heatseal our reinforcements in most of our
products for extra strength and to prevent side to side shrinkage
in tops. Heatsealed reinforcements will not bubble or fail over
time as do most glued reinforcements.
*Glass
Windows: All Robbins glass windows are manufactured using full
width, first quality toppings. Robbins Heatseals glass into our
tops and glass window assemblies using the same techniques as
GM, Ford, Chrysler, Saab and other convertible manufacturers; and
do not use inferior methods which produce weak bonds such as using
silicone to install glass into window assemblies. We add
reinforcements for extra strength when necessary, use all factory
style extrusions and components, and carefully finish our glass
window assemblies.
We offer clear,
tinted and tinted with heater/defroster glass windows as
convertibles were originally equipped. Our glass windows are made
using tempered safety glass, and are marked AS-2 to show they meet
all requirements of the National Traffic and Vehicle Safety Act,
and the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 205 (Glazing
Materials CF MVSS 205).
*Plastic
Windows: Like our tops and glass windows, we use only full
width, first quality toppings to manufacture our plastic window
assemblies. We use Regalite B.U.V. and Ultrashield plastic sheets,
never lower quality less expensive grades. We duplicate all factory
style extrusions and components.
*Finish and
Detail: Robbins purchases full width cloth and vinyl binding
materials that are run to our specifications, to make most bindings
we use to finish our tops and other products. Our bindings are more
supple and sew on easily without bunching around tight curves on
tops. Stitching in our products is held to a uniform length, and we
do not ship products with broken or erratic stitches.
*
Pre-Punched Bolt Holes And Alignment Guide
Holes:
Robbins has added
pre-punched bolt holes and alignment guide holes for precise fit
and to speed installation in late model Chrysler, Mustang, and GM
convertible tops and glass windows. For many other tops and window
assemblies we show alignment guide holes for trimmers to correctly
position top quarters and glass and plastic window
assemblies.
*Innovation
is part of our Heritage: Robbins has been granted a number of
patents for our innovative designs, such as our Rainguard deck seam
process for 1980-93 VW Rabbit and Cabriolet convertibles; and our
Flex-Hinge extrusion for folding glass rear windows.
In 1994 Robbins
developed the first tops with glass window for 1990-97 Miata
convertibles in order to offer owners a top that is far superior to
factory tops with plastic windows.
*Testing
and Quality Systems: For each lot of topping we receive Robbins
performs stretch testing, sew testing and heatseal testing. We test
all lots of thread, plastic sheets and other critical raw materials
before they can be used to manufacture our products.
Robbins passed the
tough Ford Q1 Quality Audit. We are currently working to obtain ISO
9000 quality system certification, and are committed to continuous
improvement of our processes, products and level of service.
*SINCE
1943 Three generations of the Robbins family have owned and
operated Robbins Auto Top Co. Our experience in the design,
manufacturing and installation of convertible tops, glass and
plastic windows, tonneau covers and related products is unmatched
in the industry.
*Our Own
Shop: Our business began as a trim shop, and we continue to
operate our own shop as an R & D center, where we install our
products daily to constantly check their fit and
appearance.
